Why You're Not Showing Up on Google (And What to Do About It)
If people can't find your business when they search for what you do, you're losing customers. Here's why it's happening and how to fix it.
You search for your business on Google. Nothing. You search for what you do — "plumber in Bayamón" or "best tacos in San Juan" — and you're nowhere.
Your competitor shows up. You don't.
That's not bad luck. Here's what's actually happening.
Google Doesn't Know You Exist
If you don't have a website, Google has nothing to index. If you only have a Facebook page, that's not enough. Facebook doesn't rank well for local searches.
Google shows businesses that have:
- A real website (not just social media)
- A Google Business Profile (the thing that shows you on Maps)
- Content that matches what people are searching for
If you're missing any of these, you're invisible.
Your Website Isn't Telling Google What You Do
Having a website isn't enough. If it doesn't clearly say what you do and where you do it, Google can't connect you to searches.
Bad example: "Welcome to our business. We offer quality services to valued customers."
Good example: "Emergency plumbing repairs in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Available 24/7 for leaks, clogs, and water heater issues."
See the difference? The second one tells Google exactly what you do and where.
You Don't Have a Google Business Profile
This is the biggest one.
When someone searches "dentist near me" or "restaurant in Ponce," the results that show up on the map come from Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business).
If you don't have one, or it's incomplete, you don't show up. Period.
Setting one up is free. It takes 20 minutes. And it's the single most important thing you can do to get found locally.
Your Competitors Are Doing the Work
They're not smarter. They're not spending thousands on ads. They just did the basics:
- Created a Google Business Profile
- Built a website that clearly states what they do
- Added their business to Google Maps
- Got a few customer reviews
That's it. That's what's keeping them ahead of you.
What You Can Do About It
Step 1: Claim Your Google Business Profile
Go to google.com/business and set it up. Add:
- Your business name
- Your address
- Your phone number
- Your hours
- Photos of your business
- A description of what you do
This alone will get you on the map.
Step 2: Get a Real Website
Not a Facebook page. Not an Instagram bio link. A real website with your own domain name.
It doesn't have to be fancy. It needs to clearly say:
- What you do
- Where you're located
- How to contact you
That's the baseline.
Step 3: Ask for Reviews
Once you have your Google Business Profile, ask happy customers to leave a review. It doesn't have to be a novel. A sentence is fine.
More reviews = higher ranking. Google trusts businesses that other people vouch for.
The Real Talk
If you've been in business for years and you're still not showing up on Google, it's costing you money. Every day.
People are searching for what you do. They're finding your competitor instead. They're calling them, not you.
This isn't complicated. It's just work that needs to get done.
You can do it yourself — set up the Google Business Profile, build a basic site, ask for reviews.
Or you can have someone do it for you. Either way, it needs to happen.
